Protecting Your Hearing During a Holiday

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can occur suddenly or over a period of time, due to constant exposure to loud noise. During a holiday such as the 4th of July where fireworks are used to celebrate, it is important to know how to protect your hearing to prevent hearing damage.

When exposed to loud noise, the delicate parts in our inner ear or hair cells can be damaged, resulting in loss of hearing. These hair cells, as we explained in a previous article, are the ones responsible for converting sound energy into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once they are damaged there is no turning back.

It is important to consider the use of earplugs or other protective device, which will allow you to enjoy the festivities without having to worry about your hearing health.  Since children are at a higher risk of suffering from NIHL, it is important to protect their hearing as well, and keep the earplugs in place throughout the show.  For more information on ways in which you can prevent hearing damage, contact your local New Generation Hearing center.
